Rainer Friedel was born in 1947 in Berlitt, now the state of Brandenburg. After attending school for 12 years and graduating from high school, he studied animal production at the Karl Marx University in Leipzig from 1968 to 1972. He then earned his doctorate in agriculture at the Research Center for Animal Production in Dummerstorf. Rainer Friedel then became director of the Young Cattle Breeding Production Association in Zingst, one of the largest agricultural companies in the GDR (15,000 hectares, 50,000 young cattle). In this job, he learned much about large-scale agriculture in bird and water protection areas, which was a crucial technical basis for his entire professional career. By evaluating his experiences from managing this agricultural organization, he qualified as a professor at the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of the GDR. In 1990, Rainer Friedel founded his first own company (Agro-Öko-Consult GmbH) to advise agricultural businesses and agricultural authorities. This company opened its own organic control and certification office in 1992. In 2007, together with the Dutch-based Control Union Certifications, which at the time had 100 certification offices in 70 countries, he founded the joint Berlin-based branch of Control Union Certifications and took over the development and management of this company, which then worked for farmers, agricultural organizations and governments worldwide. In 2014, after retiring from active professional life, he handed over this company with 60 employees to his successor. Immediately before, he founded the Control Union Academy to continue to pass on his experiences to farmers and governments in Germany and internationally. His professional interests continue to be the future-oriented, sustainable agricultural production that humanity needs to live and survive.
