American Transport Police

American transport police are specialized law enforcement officers who provide safety and security for mass transit systems.
Transport police are both special train police, see my book Amtrak Police and police in other mass transport systems like buses, subways, ports and properties like stations, tracks, garages, tunnels and bridges. Transport police look after the properties and their passengers. Their duties include investigating crimes, responding to emergencies, patrolling the transit properties meaning stations and platforms, tracks and equipment, and enforcing laws.
Transport police have the same powers as other sworn officers, can enforce laws and arrest individuals for crimes committed on transit property, and patrol transit systems to deter and respond to criminal activity.
To give you an idea of the challenges, there are over 7 million passengers daily in the New York City Subway, abt 670,000 daily rides in the Washington DC system, abt 420,000 daily rides in Chicago and abt 174,000 daily rides in the Bay Area. Amtrak has over 500 stations, New York City has over 472 stations and the Chicago L system has 146. Abt 20,000 container trucks - drayages - leave the New York and New Jersey ports every day.
