Bini, hani, gangi? If you are learning High German, you may be puzzled by the dialect words you hear as local people talk to each other in Swiss German. Basel Dialect Verbs is written for incomers to the Basel region who want to understand the local dialect being spoken around them. It presents the most common verbs clearly and simply in tables and translates them into English and High German. Workout exercises and online audio are provided to practise using the verbs in simple sentences. The spelling is based on a survey of typical spelling used by around 80 people from Basel in their online communication.

Margaret Oertig is originally from Scotland and has lived in the Basel area since 1987. She worked for many years as an English teacher and intercultural communication educator for international companies and the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland, FHNW. She is the author of several books for incomers to Switzerland, including the best seller Beyond Chocolate: understanding Swiss Culture and Going Local: your guide to Swiss schooling.
