Exitus et Initium explores a Theology of Vulnerability. Here, human brokenness is not seen as mere moral failure, but as an integral part of human existence. Using the example of failed marriages, the volume examines how the Church can bridge one of the most painful gaps between the lofty ideals of Catholic doctrine and the realities of modern life through discernment and mercy. What happens to people whose marriages have broken down, whose civil unions have ended, but whose lives go on - with guilt, hurt, responsibility, new love, and a longing for belonging?
The Catholic Church holds fast to marriage as a sacrament: as a covenant, as an effective sign of grace, as a reflection of Christ's fidelity to his Church. Yet it is precisely this lofty theology that creates a dramatic fall when concrete life stories fail. This book guides readers through the social, theological, and pastoral dimensions of divorce, remarriage, and possible reintegration before the altar. It explains the inner logic of Catholic marriage doctrine, analyzes the development from Familiaris consortio to Amoris laetitia, sheds light on the role of pastors, and explores paths to reform that neither trivialize the sacrament nor push wounded people out of the Church.
The text calls for a shift away from social stigmatization toward a "transformed responsibility," in which shame is healed and new life paths are theologically honored. The perspective broadens to include structural wounds and a Church that emerges as a place of honest truth-seeking: vulnerability and failure as central sites of God's grace. Exitus et initium is thus a reflection on people caught between end and beginning - and outlines a theological reorientation for a church that must decide whether to bless only the unbroken ideal or to open a place before the altar for wounded lives as well.
