Geoff Manley was educated in Cambridge (U.K.) and Princeton (N.J.) before holding a post-doctoral position in Australia and Assistant and Associate Professorships at McGill (Montreal). He was then the founding Professor of the Institute for Zoology at the Technical University in Munich (Germany), a position from which he retired in 2011. His research emphasis has always been a comparative approach to the middle and inner ear, studying amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. For this work he received the prestigious Award of Merit of the Association for Research in Otolaryngology (ARO, 2016). He is the author or co-author of many books and of about 200 scientific articles. After retirement, he has concentrated on studying human hearing, culminating in this book.
