This research is an extensive survey and the first explorative empirical study of awareness in comatose states and the possibility of contact and communication with comatose patients in a neurological intensive care unit setting using Process-oriented Coma Work methods developed by Arnold Mindell. Practical and ethical consequences will be discussed.

Peter Ammann is a psychologist, body worker and diploma candidate in Process Work with the Research Society for Process Oriented Psychology U. K. He has been involved in Process Work since 1993 and has worked in private practice for 23 years in Wuppertal, Germany. In addition to his practice as a psychologist he works with people in withdrawn states of consciousness and teaches process-oriented Coma Work to other professionals. For four years together with a chaplain he has been leading a training for chaplains working with comatose patients on intensive care units.
